If anyone could give me a betetr idea of what it might involve, or have been one in the past....that'd be great if you could help.

You need to check specifics with the hospital. It can mean transferring patients for x-ray, etc. Similar to a transportation aide, or it can be delivering items to a unit.

Suggest that you get specifics on it.

A porter in the US is someone that delivers luggage to your hotel room, or takes your luggage to your car, etc....................this is the routine meaning here.
