Polk State College - Spring 2015

U.S.A. Florida

Hey everyone! The application window for PSC starts on the 2nd, so I figured I'd start a thread to discuss :) Anyone else on here applying?

Is there anyone out there who still hasn't received a response letter yet, like me? Mail just came and still nada... :(

You will be given a number at Orientation...lottery ...for the choice of Clinical assignments but that is for Fall. I don;t know with the changes to the curriculum how they will select clinical rotation.

7 or 8 alternates for the Fall 2014 start got in at Orientaion and a day or two later. They give you the option of starting a semester later if you want...Microbiology is rough to do it while in Nursing is even harder and they want to give those in need of it to start later in Nursing. The number of alternates that get in depends on those who push off their start, as well as those who can't pass background, and believe it or not the ones who don't show up for Orientation. Congrats to all!

I lived a few towns away from Polk..different county and as I was a student I went to the Nursing office and asked since my mail came and went for 2 days past everyone else getting their letter. Coulnd't wait any longer but you are too far away for that. I would call the Nursing dept if it hasn't come by this coming week.

I got in! My letter came waaaay late but it made it finally. Now I'm just waiting to hear back from Eastern Florida -I think their letters are going out this week. Then it's decision time. :)

Hi all - this is a little off topic but I am moving to Winter Haven/Lakeland in January for PSC Nursing and was wondering if anyone who is currently in healthcare has any suggestions on where is good (or not so good) to look into for a CNA job? Would prefer a hospital of course but skilled nursing would be okay too. Thanks!

This semester AH1 is on Tuesdays 8-4 and Pharm is either Thursday from 8-12 or 9-1 with AH1 Lab in the alternate time. My clinical is Monday from 6:30 to 3. 10 hours a week in the nursing lab with one week at 12 hours. But this will change I would guess with the dropping of the Intro to Nursing class and merging it into AH1 in the Spring 2015 semester. I heard pretty fast on the acceptance into the program as you have a lot of bacckground checks and vaccine titers etc. to get done. Good luck to all! and to Flo Grown...Congrats!!! on this accomplishment, as a Nursing 1 student we may be volunteering to help with the pinning ceremony for you guys. Have a great, albeit busy 4th semester!

Could you elaborate on the amount of time generally required to be spent in the skills lab OUTSIDE of Tues 8a-4p and Thurs 8a-4p (or Thurs 9a-5p)? I'm not 100% clear on that. Thanks!

This semester has been a TOTAL of 32 required lab hours, they break them up over test periods(about 4 weeks )for example they will required 10 labs hours to be completed by a certain date, then another 10 by another date, we are currently working on our 3rd 10 hour set of lab hours, the last chunk is 12 hours. You need to do them and extra hours DO NOT carry over to the next measured period of time. You class will be integrating material covered in Intro ...I am not sure how much lab time that will add because Intro focused on things like bed baths, bed making, positioning patients, etc.

Helpful hints:

1.) Sleep now, as much as you can.

2.) Dust off your A&P text book

3.) If you are self pay, text books for AH1 and Pharm are going to add up to more than $1000...but you will use them all the way through with some add ons.

4.) They told you A&P and Micro were designed to cull students who were not going to make it in the program, the program is not easy, it is challenging, the culling will continue throughout the entirety of the program...

5.) Review A&P 1....SNS, adrenergic, cholinergic, enzymes, receptors, diffusion, osmosis, cations, anions, metabolism, etc are all going to come back to haunt you.

6.) take a nap

7.)treat yourself to a nice weekend before you start.

8.) Be willing to interact beyond your usual group of class buddies, the more you reach out and make connections, the better off you will be, you will make new best friends in lab and clinical.

9.) Take a minute and listen to your instructors, they spend 7+ hours a day with you and practice in the community, absolutely amazing group of women and men giving back to the profession of nursing and the community by teaching you.

10.) Oh yeah, if you haven't realized it yet....AH1 and AH3 meet in Winter Haven, AH2 and AH4 in Lakeland...shorter drive for some, long commute for others, budget for gas, car repairs, etc.

Cool thank you, that's really good info to know. So it sounds like that could boil down to about 2 hrs per wk for extra lab time, give or take, spread over a 16 week term. What are the lab hours (of operation) like?

Usually open 8-4 on non class days including Saturday, 8-6 on class days in WH, closed Sundays and holidays ..I am not sure what happens in Lakeland schedule wise. They do close the nursing lab for CPE's for other classes(schedule posted on door), they will close for simulations and class labs...but you would mostly likely be doing something else on campus during class lab and sims. I work one day a week at most, but I have kids, so I am not as flexible. Some people do manage full time around school...I am not sure how they manage it....

I am able to offer ASHI CPRPro for Healthcare workers at 30.00 if anyone is interested. The course can be completed online and then after the hands-on performance is completed in person, you will get your card. Valid for 2 years. For more info text me at 813-293-5551. Offered since 1996. Thanks, Steve Fish
