PMHNP student - should I buy the DSM-5 PDR or Manual?

Hi everyone!

I am starting my specialty graduate program this fall and in looking at my class's required textbooks, our professor recommends either the DSM-5 PDR or Manual, and I can't find much information on how they are different, or which one would be best for a student. I know the Manual is double the number of pages and about three times the weight of the PDR, so I was thinking the manual might be more useful for citations, is that accurate, or should I save my money and just buy the PDR?

I don't know what the difference is or what either is, but...

I have the DSM-V and it's great for at the desk. It's also very big and gives every detail you ever dreamed. I also have a spiral-bound "Desk Reference to the Diagnositic Criteria from DSM-IV-TR". I find that one especially useful, since it gives the basics when I don't have time to read a chapter. It's also nice for when I have to go to different sites, since it fits in my pocket (a big pocket). When the DSM-V verson comes out, I intend to get it.

Am thinking of buying it too but I'm not sure if I need or have the time for the extra large full size books. Either way I might buy the pocket version and the book itself....question is where do you guys buy it from? I'm in Canada on the outskirts of the Greater Toronto Area and am hoping to just purchase it from the web but I'm not sure where I can get a good deal for these two and in new condition of course.

Phoenix Rising Hi, I've worked, as an LPN and BSN, in more than a few Psychiatric facilities. The DSM-IV-TR is a very handy reference to have, especially for writing papers and diagnosing. I was wondering, how is the course so far? Are you doing MSN or DNP? I'm thinking about applying soon for the DNP program at Uniform Services University of Heath Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. I am trying to think of what refresher classes I should take in preparation for the rigorous coursework. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am currently CCRN certified working in critical care/ intensive care and need advice before I start this venture.....

I got mine through www.amazon.com Get the DSM-V rather than the IV.

The APA site offers the newly published DSM 5 Clinical Cases book and the desk reference are just out, and a study manual, test questions, etc. are due out early in the coming year. I believe they also sell internationally.
