PLU ELMSN 2020-2021 COHORT

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I haven't seen a thread made yet so here we go! Anyone else applying to the PLU 2020 EL-MSN cohort?

Specializes in CNA.

Congratulations!! Thanks for posting so I can keep an eye out!!

To anyone who is in the program or has been accepted, were you also offered a scholarship in the initial acceptance email? In the original email PLU sent me, they said I will receive, "the Dean's Excellence in Nursing Leadership Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 for graduate study." I'm just wondering if this is a standard scholarship everyone gets or not.

I applied as well! Has anyone heard back yet? ?

@Allyray Hey! I applied too but haven't heard anything back yet. I know 3 people who got accepted in mid January so I am losing hope.. ?

Hi everyone! I know waiting must be hard so here are some thoughts from someone who's already been accepted and has been in contact with graduate admissions.

The last day to submit seat deposits for the initial round of acceptance invitations is February 6th. In addition to submitting seat deposits, we must sign a couple different contracts to secure our seats for this cohort. I'm assuming once February 6th comes, the admissions team will look at how many seats they still have to fill and then send more invites out.

If you haven't yet called graduate admissions at PLU, I don't think it would hurt to give them a call. Faculty have been really friendly and helpful when I've reached out to them.

As for my seat in this program, I've accepted the invitation and submitted the seat deposit. However, I just interviewed for another program and I won't hear back from them of whether I get accepted/denied until March. So I may be forfeiting my seat depending on the outcome. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this position due to how early this program sent out its invitations compared to similar programs I've seen.

I hope this helps! Good luck you guys!

Thanks for the input @Dylan Miller it’s been very helpful.

Just received acceptance email

I just got my acceptance email!! ?

I was notified today that I was accepted! After all of my frustrations and waiting it finally happened. Stay positive guys!

Congratulations everyone! That's amazing news ???

I received my acceptance!!! This feels so unreal!!!!

Hi! I'm in the 2018 cohort, graduating this August. The aim of the program does seem vague and confusing. I don't think the school does a good job of advertising and explaining it on their website or during their info session. The graduate portion of the MSN helps you develop skills in nursing leadership, interprofessional communication/teamwork, and conducting quality improvement. The program is preparing to be a nurse with bedside skills that can go above just performing bedside nursing. That could be leadership such as nursing manager of an inpatient unit, or go on to be a chief nursing officer or nursing director. It could also be resource management, nurse educator, house supervisor.

Personally, I went into the program with the goal of applying for a DNP after the MSN. The reasons for picking MSN over BSN were - 1) I already had a MSc degree, and I didn't want "go backwards", 2) I wasn't a fan of the UW's accelerated BSN application (too many hoops to jump through for me); 3) the MSN was about the same length of time as a BSN at Seattle U, but I can start working as a RN a year sooner. Going through this year of graduate studies, I'm realizing the options that I have when I have a MSN degree. DNP is still a very good option, but I love that I'm not restricted to just that one path. Currently I'm doing a graduate preceptorship with an ELM graduate from a previous cohort. She is the second ELM that I have met that was promoted to unit management within 2 years of graduating. We had some professors who were ELMs (unfortunately have left the school at this point), and they are all doing extremely in leadership or management positions.

PS. You cannot start the DNP program right after the MSN, you need a gap year to complete some additional courses. This is due to a recent restructuring of the MSN or DNP curriculum

PPS. The CNL requirement over the advance generalist is only an additional 10hrs of clinical time, which is really easily arranged with your graduate preceptors. The exam is held at PLU. PLU students get a discount if you write it there.
