Okay guys, when I first registered for all my classes I was given very direct and clear instructions. Schedule around any of the possible clinical days.
Possible clinical days = Wed Fri Sat Sun.
On Mon I have health assessment and Tues and Thurs I have Nursing theory from 12-4:30
Working with what the school offered I scheduled my humanity and my psychology class @ 0800 to 1120 to make it work.
it so happens that now starting clinical rotations my instructor might have us go on Thursdays (DAY before clinical) to pick up pt info. BUT... I am in class ALL day until 5pm which means I have to go around something they told me is called Shift Change which is from 5:30 to 7:00
she said I will be having to be handing over the clipboard over and over and might be there until 10PM trying to get my pt info. Is she serious? 10PM?
and how will I deal with doctors and nurses wanting the clipboard? I will obviously surrender it without question but . . . I am scared of being harassed or yelled. They don't exactly know my situation.

if you can go during shift change, that might actually be a benefit to you - because you can listen (and take lots of notes) to the shift report on your pt, and then once they've given report you can grab the chart and get any background/lab/historical data you need to prep for the next day's clinicals.
Hospital I'm going to isn't computerized . . . big part of the reason for the whole chart sharing. Hope I can manage this. I'm wondering if she's dead serious about 10PM. That's crazy. I would imagine after report things would slow a bit down. Report takes ... about what? an hour max per pt? Argh. Does shift change and report start as early as 5:30? hypothetically their shift is at 7pm ... (I think).. 7a to 7p so.. wouldnt report start around that time? So when nurses go into work they show up 2 hours before their original time to get report? Man Im so confused.

She isn't serious about 10 pm......While it might be more difficult to look at the chart because you will have to relinquish it for the staff to close out their shift and be sure that the orders for the day have been completed. The on coming shift looks at the chart to be sure that there isn't anything forgotten in report that needs to be done ASAP.
The is a ton of work that goes into leaving and coming to work when you care for patients and the nurses are very busy at that time closing out the day and might not have time to answer your questions. I like the idea of listening to report....hearing what the nurses focus on. A gentle reminder.......Remember those nurses are there for the patient....not you and your school work.
But I think 10 pm is a bit of a stretch.
I wish you the best in school....it will all work out.
