the physican orders 0.3 mg/kg of ampicillin as a one time dose. the child weighs 38kg. the recommended safe dose is 0.2 - 0.3mg/kg with a max dose of 10mg. Is this a safe dose?
ordered dose: 0.3 mg x 38 kg = 11.4 mg/kg
recommended range : 0.2 x 38kg = 7.6mg
recommended max: 0.3 x 38kg = 11.4 mg
at first i thought the ordered dose was safe, since I got 11.4 mg.... but when I checked my answer with the system it said that the answer was NO. not a safe dose.....
Is it because the 11.4 mg is over the max dose of 10? Could someone explain to me, I would appreciate it!!!! Thank you.

yes, you are correct. if 10 mg is a max dose, then a 11.4 mg is too much to be giving the patient.
Thank you sooooo much:yeah:for explaning it to me.....
