Nitroglycerine is ordered to infused at 100 mcg/min. the concentration is 50 mg/250ml D5W. at what rate will you set the pump.

I did 50mg/250ml = 0.2mg/ml; convert to mcg = 200mcg/ml.

ml/hr = ml/200mcg x 100mcg/min x 60 min/hr = 6000/200 = 30ml/hr.

Also I did it this way.

50mg/250ml = 0.2 mg/ml ; convert to mcg = 200mcg/ml.

the order is: 100 mcg/min x 60 min = 6000mcg/hr

ml/hr = ml/200mcg x 6000mcg/hr = 30 ml/hr

Please let me know if I am doing this problem correctly; I like the dimensional analysis way... I am open to suggestions.... Thank you:D

I worked out the problem and I also got the same answer as you, so you got it right. You know how to do these. Don't short sell yourself. :-)

Here is how I set it up. You always want to look at what the doctor ordered over what you have. The doctor ordered 100 mcg per minute, the drug you have available is 50 mg in 250 mls of fluid. All you have to do is convert micrograms to milligrams and multiply it by 60 minutes. Cancel stuff out as necessary.

ml/hour = 100 mcg/min X 250 ml/50 mg X 1 mg/1000mcg X 60 min/1 hour. You will be left with 30 mls/1 hour.

Another way of visualising the formula:

100 mcg X 250 ml X 1mg X 60 min

---------------------------------- = 30 ml per hour

1 min X 50 mg X 1000mcg X 1 hour
