Has anyone every taken Physiological Chemistry. What exactly is it, how is it different than regular Chemistry, and what are the best things to study for it?

Your question got me curious. Here's a website for a Physiological Chemistry class, it should give you a good idea:

http://www.stark.kent.edu/~cearley/PChem/pchem.htm

Basically, chemistry as it applies to the body.

Includes:

Amino Acids - (Summary Sheet)

Protein Structure and Function - (Summary Sheet)

Enzyme Kinetics - (Summary Sheet)

Inhibitors - (Summary Sheet)

Carbohydrates - (Summary Sheet)

Glycolysis - (Summary Sheet)

Reactions involving Glycogen - (Summary Sheet)

Lipid Structure and Metabolism - (Summary Sheet)

Lipid Metabolism - (Summary Sheet)

Krebs Cycle - (Summary Sheet)

DNA - (Summary Sheet)

Chemical Reactions and Biochemical Reaction Pathways

Diagram of Krebs cycle

Diagram of Electron Transport Chain

Simple diagram showing integration of metabolic pathways

Simple procedure to classify biochemical reactions

Thank you, I looked up some of the websites myself, but some of them did not really give any real detail about what they were teaching. I did not know exactly what they were starting with and what they were ending with. This web sites seems to be pretty good. It actually seems as though Physiological Chemistry is going to help me alot. It's teaching you more how the body responds to different chemicals instead of just what the chemicals are what they do. **I LIKE**Thank you for the help.

HI!

I just took it, with micro and 3 gen-eds, I might add. Got an A. General and organic chem understanding is a must, but they might review that with you. The most work was the reactions in glycolysis, krebs and ETC that need to be memorized as well as esterification and saponification etc. If you paid attention in A&P and nutrition, you will understand most of it. I took it from another part of the university system as allied health chemistry in lieu of basic molecular biology 208, and they are letting me take basic chem for May term in lieu of BMB 207. I absolutly loved it. Good Luck!!!
