phenothiazide

Published

Phenothiazide is a new classification of drugs to me. I have not been able to find exactly what type of drug this is or how it works. I have looked in drug books and on the internet. The only thing I do know is that it is a drug used for Psychiatric patients. I heard of the drug when I was studying for boards. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Can't find an exact match as a specific drug, but phenothiazines are anti-psychotic drugs also known as neuroleptics. Hope this is helpfull.

You'd have better luck looking up phenothiazines. A common one is Thorazine.

Phenothiazines (FEE-noe-THYE-a-zeens) are used to treat serious mental and emotional disorders, including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Some are used also to control agitation in certain patients, severe nausea and vomiting, severe hiccups, and moderate to severe pain in some hospitalized patients. Chlorpromazine is used also in the treatment of certain types of porphyria, and with other medicines in the treatment of tetorifice.

as mentioned in other replys phenothiazides (chlorpromazine) are used in the treatment of acute and chronic psychosis, particularly when accompanied by increased psychomotor activity. This classification of drug, blocks dopamine receptors in the brain and also alters dopamine release and turnover, as findings indicate that schizophrenic clients may have an increase in this chemical as well as norepinephrine, and serotonin
