PharmD interested in nursing careers

Published

Hi there,

I came across this forum after doing some career soul searching. I am a pharmacist by training. I went into a pharmacy program straight out of high school and so my only degree is the PharmD. In retrospect, I feel there could have been a better professional fit for me, but was unsure what. I think the subject matter is interesting, but I was never interested in retail and like hospital and clinical work. I didn't mind working retail until I find a hospital job, but boy I did not imagine I'd be applying to 400 upward jobs all over the country with no offer in sight.

I've recently worked with a number of nurses during the COVID-19 vaccine distribution which is where I realized I would have probably enjoyed nursing more. I realize PharmD to RN is not a common transition and neither encouraged on this forum. I just feel stuck with the credentials I have not providing me with more opportunities. I see some overlap in a few RN/PharmD positions (for example, poison specialist, diabetes education, anticoag clinics). I'd love to have such a job, or something in ambulatory care. I enjoy immunizing. Many suggest going from PharmD to MD/DO and I don't have the grades for going to medical school, plus cost and time investment are things to think about.

Would love to hear suggestions and ideas.
