Periop nursing course in Ontario?

Hi guys!

I am a 24 y/o RN currently working on a busy acute medicine floor in Hamilton, ON! I was hired as a new grad and have been working in medicine for a bit over 1.5 years now. I've been a long time lurker of this site and I was hoping if anyone could shed some light on how to obtain a perioperative nursing certificate while still working part time.

I called a continuing education coordinator for Mohawk College regarding the program and she told me that it can take up to a year to complete and that the final clinical will be full time work for several weeks.

My question is whether it possible to complete this course successfully given my situation?

Hi

I'm currently enrolled in the perioperative course at Mohawk College and work full time. It can be done, but you have to stay on top of your readings and assignments (just like any course). The placement is a full time 150 hour practicum which works out to be about 1 month.

Thanks for the quick response! Do you mind expanding a little on the process you went through to enroll? Did you have to ask your floor manager to allow certain days off or time off to complete the clinical? Also are you allowed to do placement at your place of employment?

I enrolled by registering online just like any other student. we completed labs which were conducted on the weekends (either a Saturday or Sunday). As for the clinical aspect, I'm still waiting for a hospital to take me on as a student in which I will ask my employer for a month off. I work in family practice right now, but I'm sure you could do your placement in the hospital you already work in.

Again, thank you for responding back, I really do appreciate it! :) I'm feeling even more motivated to enroll! I really hope that I'll be able to work the courses around my work schedule with all the nights and weekends unfortunately. I also couldn't even get approval for a full week of vacation time I'm entitled to! -.- Still I'm gonna stay optimistic!

You can ask for a leave of absence when it's time to do the full-time clinical, that's what I plan on doing.
