Perinatal loss comfort kits/memory boxes

Hello!

I am a L&D nurse and our unit is trying to revamp our perinatal loss memory boxes and what we provide the families who experience loss. We are also trying to create comfort kits for the parents. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share what their units do in the event of a loss and what is provided to the families. I would be really pleased to have feedback in terms of what you have found useful or beneficial to parents. Any insight welcome.

Currently our memory box includes: photos taken by the nurses, a charm bracelet, a card signed by the care team, a hat and blanket (made by volunteers), footprint card and a crib card (with details of the birth). It is packaged in a simple giftbox and offered to the families. If they decline we give it to the social worker who keeps it in case they change their minds.

We are thinking of making comfort kits to provide as well. We thought of including: basic toiletries (toothbrush, maybe bodywash?), gum, snacks (granola bar, dried fruit), a distraction (puzzle book, colouring book), socks, lip balm... etc

I am looking forward to hearing your feedback and ideas!

I only have time for a quick reply, but wanted to point you in the direction of Gundersen. They're big with perinatal loss, and provide training and workshops that I have attended and found very useful and helpful. If you look around their website, they have a products section that shows a lot of stuff they supply (not endorsing them, just sourcing them for ideas).

You're on the right track with the comfort kit. That's a great idea. My unit provides a fully stocked cart with food and drinks for the patient to keep in her room with her at all times as well.
