I just read a post from 2004 about PJC which said some really bad/scary things about the nursing program there. They just got NLNAC accredited and I was wondering if anybody has gone through the program more recently and if it's improved since then. That's where I'm planning on going, so I'm hoping to hear some better stories, because that has me kind of scared!!
Thanks!
I was homeschooled for most of my school years, and on my GED i got a total score of 3580- so i think my GPA is about 3.6. I really appreciate your opinions- It helps to know someone who is familiar with working with the same school. Any further info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!
I'm very sad to see that it seems not much has changed since 1983-1984 when I attended nursing school there.
It seemed the instructors had all forgotten about that is was YOU paying THEM to teach you, not having the "privilege" of them "putting their licenses on the line" to teach you. *rolls eyes*
I dropped out in the RN program after I completed the LPN program and have NEVER regretted it. It was like military boot camp except the new soldiers didn't have to scrounge around to pay the enormous fees and tuition for EVERYTHING.
I am not the only one. Many, even those who graduated, were still bitter years afterward.
I would think with a nursing shortage it would make them strive to keep their nursing students going instead of tearing them down all of the time.
I knew quite a number of nurses who graduated, got their licenses, worked and still gave up the profession because of the demands and lack of support from management, increased workloads, etc.
Even after all the years, I haven't forgotten it. It turned me off of nursing forever, but maybe it just wasn't meant to be. (I was 19-20 years old at the time.)
I was in that class with the whole mess back in 08. The school was terrible and I totally agree with the majority. But... I am hoping that with new a new director things will get better. I know that this director is the 4th one that I know of since I began the program in 06. I was almost done, passed everything, even ob/peds. But Adults 2 is the killer. I felt the same way. Totally bitter. I am hoping that because now that they are accredited, and the new director is determined to turn this program around, that it will be a little more organized. I am going to give it one more shot, but if it doesn't work out then I will just deal with it. They got rid of a lot of the teachers that were "shady" so I am hoping that it will be better.
So student4lyf, Are you in the program now? Im in career mobility going into adults health 2; my teacher is Uletha Jones. Does anyone knows how this class will be, or what to expect
Not yet in the program. I went through the RN program and failed out because I took Adults 2 twice and didnt' pass by just a couple points. It was heartbreaking. I am taking my NCLEX for LPN mid-October and then when I get my license, I am going to go through the career mobility program. I don't know Uletha Jones... Well, I know of her, but she was not my instructor. I heard that she's tough. When I was there, she taught Adults 3. But, if you do what's expected of you and are willing to learn, forget about all the drama from the other students, then it should be okay. I have other friends that moved on and said that she was the toughest instructor they had in the program but I can't say that for sure because i didn't have her. Good luck in your endeavor! From what I understand, the new director that is there now is wanting to restore the school's reputation. I pray that she does it, because they are very messy and unorganized. BUT, if you have YOUR ducks in a row, and keep a copy of EVERYTHING that you turn in, you should do fine. I know how they are, and if they say something... make sure you get it in writing just to cover yourself. Hopefully I will be joining you soon!
I am hoping to get into the Nights/Weekend course at PJC...I take the entrance exam in September. I have been a candidate before but couldn't start the program. I took the NLN twice and passed it with flying colors...the advisor at PJC told me if I could pass the NLN i could pass the nclex.
I am really worried about starting the program...being a nurse is what I am meant to do. I am just so worried about getting into the program and not succedding. and it won't be for lack of trying..just nervous jitters I suppose.
Whoa there... passing the NLN and passing the NCLEX are two different things. NCLEX is unlike any other test that you will ever take. (With the exception of the NCLEX-RN) I just took the NCLEX-PN and I can tell you that you have to know your stuff and know how to apply those critical thinking skills. All that stuff they teach you in school is relevent, but NCLEX tests in a much different way to see if you are capable of applying those critical thinking skills that you learned in school and in clinical.I am hoping to get into the Nights/Weekend course at PJC...I take the entrance exam in September. If you want to be a nurse, then do it. Don't let "jitters" stop you. You will get over that with a quickness. Don't be worried about starting the program. It will be fine. There is new staff, new director, and it's supposed to be an "improvement" in the program. So... get out there and do it.
I (prayfully) will be starting the LPN to RN Career Mobility program in May 2011. From what I understand, the nights and weekends are a little more laid back. That's what I am shooting for because i have a great job right now and I really don't want to quit. :-) Good luck with your decision! Hope it all works out for you.
christih: The HESI exam is what has to be passed to get on the waiting list, the nclex is the state board exam that when you pass you are a licensed nurse to practice. I am happy that you are on the list though, that's great! Just be patient. They can call at the last minute and they just go down the list until someone accepts the seat. Good luck!

I am also applying to the UWF BSN program. I was told they look at cumulative gpa as well as gpa on required pre-reqs and the score on the nursing entrance exam. They have not posted yet which entrance exam they will be using for 2010. I already have a BA and an MBA degree with a 3.8gpa in each, and my pre-req gpa is 3.5. The person I spoke to said I shouldn't have an issue getting in. How high is your gpa?
