Pediatric Urine Collection

Published

I work at a children's cancer hospital and when our patients under go chemo, their urine pH is checked every 15 minutes, 30 minutes or every hour depending on the result. Is there a something better than a "wee bag" to collect the urine in? Currently, we don't use the "wee bag" since they would have to be changed multiple times during the process and out patients are immunocompromised. We were using pads (feminine napkins, cut up and placed in diapers) but just discovered that the manufacturer has added a absorbant gel that interfers with the test results and we have resorted to using gauze until we find something better. Thanks!

We "oldtimers" in the NICU experienced the same problem when diapers became "super-absorbant". We resorted to strategically placing a cotton ball in baby's diaper to catch the urine so that we could extract the urine from the cotton ball. Same idea as your gauze, but a little more absorbant.

We use 2X2 gauze in the diapers.

I work at a large children's hospital and we use cotton balls...usually 3 or so in the diaper for urine glucose checks while on TPN. Works great!!!
