Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialists

Published

Can someone describe to me specific job functions, duties, etc...of a pediatric CNS? I'm trying to get some more information, and my internet searchs are just giving me some of the basic/generic info. What are the main differences between a pediatric NP and CNS? Thanks in advance!

There can be some overlapping functions of the two roles, depending on the job setting. However, the NP is educated to be a "physician extender" to at least some extent, often focuses on primary care, and usually includes some assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of medical conditions under the general supervision of a physician. That's why NP's take another exam to be certified as an NP and requires a different nursing license.

The traditional CNS role does not include the physician extender piece, but instead focuses on nursing problems, nursing issues, nursing diagnosis and interventions, etc. In may cases, the CNS works in a facility helping the staff nurses to do their jobs better by being their expert resource, mentor, educator, etc. in addition to providing some advanced assessment and problem-solving.

I hope this helps a little.
