Hello all,
Curious what is the pay difference between working for specialty-psychiatry group compared working inpatient or outpatient. The doc said I am seeing psychiatry consult ave. 20 patients/day in the hospital/s where he affiliated with. He will discuss the full details of the job and I suppose the salary and benefits next week. Currently, I am working in crisis unit and adult inpatient psych unit.
I need your thoughts about this opportunity so that I have any ideas when we meet up next week to discuss the details.
I highly appreciate your response.

If you're doing CL, get brushed up on your IM and neuro. You're going to take who knows how long to travel, and you have no idea how many patients you'll see. Request a comfortable salary that will meet your needs regardless of how much work you donor where you do it. Then look for some type of bonus over salary likely based on RVUs since I'm not sure your position will be greatly revenue producing. I could be wrong on the latter.
The doc wants me to see at least 25 pts/day, follow ups & initials. If see more than that, he give me $25/pt.
Is it normal practice to see at least 25 pts consults per day? I am thinking to counter 20 pts/day with incentives at 21 & over. What do you think? Is it appropriate & reasonable?
I really appreciate your response.

That sounds like a lot of patients. I have done psych consultations to nursing homes and I allowed one hour per pt. that included reading the chart, talking with staff, finding the patient, doing the interview and writing the note. What type of patients are these that are requiring consults.? Any idea how much they are making off you? I think a guaranteed hourly salary is best.
It's guaranteed base salary, + incentives. I will see med/surg, rehab pts that need psych consult.
The doc showed his NP records, s/he seen ranging 27 to 40 patients/ day.
Thanks for you insight. What do you think about my counter offer ( please see above)?

No way. How can you travel and do that? I see 25+ patients a day and never get out of my office chair. I think you'll have way too much logistical stress to enjoy it and stick with it. $25 extra / patient is crap. Total crap. Particularly if you have to see 29 just to make an extra hundred bucks.
Thanks for your inputs PsychGuy. I am thinking to negotiate minimum 20 pts/day + incentives. What do you think? He said I'm seeing patients in hospitals, IOP & some NH.
Any suggestions how to negotiate on this job offer will be appreciated.
