20 % Pay Cut for Ohio Independent Providers

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Any Ohio IP nurses out there? Just wondering what your thoughts are about our wages being cut by 20%. For homecare agencies their 1st hour is only being cut by 5%, while our 1st hour is being cut by 20% for doing the same work. Then for every hour after the 1st hour, agency will keep their full pay rate. Every hour after the 1st hour for independent providers will be cut by 20%, so agencies can continue to receive their full rate!

Anyone else feel the state is trying to get rid of us? 20%.....hmmn!

For Agency: (1) Effective October 1, 2011, reduce the medicaid program's first-hour-unit price for aide services to ninety-seven per cent of the price paid on June 30, 2011, and for nursing services to ninety-five percent of the price paid on June 30, 2011;

For Independent Providers: (2) Effective October 1, 2011, pay for a service that is an aide service or a nursing service provided by an independent provider eighty percent of the price it pays for the same service provided by a provider that is not an independent provider.

Oh, this was called "Victory for Home Care"

"The administration was able to reduce the cuts for agencies by reducing the rates paid to independent providers. Aside from receiving the 5% and 3% cuts on first hours for nurses and aides respectively, all Independent Providers will receive 20% less than the price paid to home care agencies, on the first hour and subsequent unit rates. The funds saved by this reduction will be used by the state to offset the cuts that were proposed for the first hour rates."

As independent provider nurses we do the same work, but yet we will no longer be receiving the same pay as agency. Anyone else out there think something is going on?

Many IPs were going to give their support to the Ohio Council for Home Care several years ago. The membership offered to us, I believe was only $125/year. Myself and others were excited. They made up a separate membership form for nurses who were independent providers to complete. Then, after talking with them, we learned, we would have no real membership benefits.....no voice, no voting rights, would not be able to advertise on their site, etc.. For these reasons, many IPs chose not to support the OCHCH. I feel, the decision amongst many IPs to vote in the SEIU was a hasty decision. Several IPs I know, told me they felt desperate for support and thought the SEIU would help them. When people feel desperate for help, they want something to believe in. It's unfortunate they did not find the support, although they were paying dues.

It was and is difficult for IPs to know which way to turn. One of the organizations/websites you mentioned, did in fact offer support for the SEIU at first when they were trying to gain momentum, and then pulled her support. Also, offered her support for the OCHCH. This confused many, especially when you are being told one thing, one week, then told something different the next week.

Independent Providers need a healthcare organization to strongly advocate on our behalf. But, it needs to be an organization who will treat us as equals and one that will truly support us. Then, perhaps IPs will start paying membership dues. I know, I gladly would.

JMO Independents do not need a union.......we are independent providers for a reason. We do need a voice to rally on our behalf, but not a union.

I don't know who encouraged you "TO LET ALL IPS KNOW AND FIND A Safe Legal WAY TO BE HEARD."

I personally have NEVER heard of IPS not using legal ways to be heard. You sound kind of silly.

NO, Independent Providers do not need a union. What we need is a home healthcare organization to advocate for us. An organization who believes in us, and who cares about issues facing independents, not just agencies.

I will try to be nice. I am amazed at the people who appear to be totally clueless, not only what is happening, but what has transpired in the past.

Not as many as you think are clueless. Tell me who do we trust?

a 15% pay cut was proposed in 2006. The Ohio Home Care Council, LPNAO and Ohioip.net fought and had that rescinded.

Do you have the documentation to substantiate your statement that the LPNAO and Ohioip.net fought and had that rescinded? IPS were fighting and did not know which way to turn. If I remember correctly, the ohioipnet was originally in talks with the union rep, Nick. IPS were being swayed that way. Then got swayed another way.

It is amazing that one respondent said she would contact her union. I think 1.75% of your pay would warrant them contacting you, but they don't care if you make minimum wage as long as they get their cut.:D

I agree, the union should be contacting her/him. A union is not what we need.

quote=jekisslpn;5410921]Professional should always support their organizations, and since the nurses working as IP's haven't done so, we are left alone and quite frankly deservedly so.

Who are we suppose to support, when there IS NOT one single organization willing to stand up for us 100%? Sure we could pay for memberships, but honestly what are these organizations going to do for us? The website for IPS is a website, not a organization. I am not trying to be mean, but half the time it is a mess.

You need to chill. Everyone has an opinion. The past, is the past and does not matter, but the future facing IPs does. We can learn from the past and not make the same mistakes. All IPs need to focus right now on finding a reputible healthcare organization to advocate for us. But, IPs need to remember if they don't start helping themselves and pull together united, no organization is going to be our voice.

And I was voicing mine.

Sorry, but when someone starts off with a phrase like "I will try to be nice. I am amazed at the people who appear to be totally clueless, not only what is happening, but what has transpired in the past" it is annoying. Trust me, we are not clueless.

IPS, IPS, come out where ever you are...

We absolutely need to fight this. Good grief who in their right mind is going to just take this crap they are doing to us? Absolutely ridiculous!!! If the "geniuses" in Congress would think about what they are doing for a minute, they are only adding to the problem. Here we are productive members of society trying to make a living and not holding our hand out like so many of the non tax payers in Ohio. Every single one of my patients left an agency because they got horrible care and often times were not seen at all by anyone for days at a time. This is discrimination against these patients as the state of Ohios goal is obviously to do away with the IP program therefore giving these people no choice but an agency if they want to stay in their homes. Someone please tell me what time August 15th is this hearing and where????????? I will be there. I'm not going down without a fight. I've worked too hard and provided great care for these people and I'm not letting that count for nothing!!!!

By the way, I had no idea until today about what the state of Ohio was doing to us by cutting our pay 20%. They have kept it a secret so they can pass it and we can do nothing about it. So when you all ask why isn't anyone fighting....it is because so many are still in the dark and don't know about this deceit and robbery!! We have to get the word out and fight for ourselves. It worked for the teachers. I wouldn't feel so bad if I had their benefits and hours and summers off. We have ZERO benefits, we work holidays, weekends and all hours without any extra pay. Geez, they have nothing to complain about. WE HAVE TO FIGHT THIS!!!!!!

It continues to amaze me how many independents still are not aware of the 20% pay reduction. I was talking with a friend the other day, whose neice is a HHA and has been with the program for 4 1/2 yrs. The next thing I knew, her niece was calling me about this, because she was in the dark about the pay reduction. She told me, she had called a half dozen for her IP HHA friends she works cases with and NONE knew about this. I then, referred her to documentaion where this bill had already been signed by the governor. We all knew there would be cuts made to the Ohio Home Care Program, but none expected this. So, they worked all this out behind our backs and made this pay cut to balance their budget and avoid having to take pay away from the agencies. They cut the pay of IPs and there are how many of us in Ohio actually working? Hmnn, I have heard maybe 1000 or so. How many home health agencies? A LOT. How many agency nurses and aides are being sent out day after day? A LOT....thousands. But, yet they are reducing the pay of the smaller group by 20% and the agencies by 5% for the 1st hour only....that is a pay cut for agencies of $2.75 a day (the large group). Now, what is wrong with this picture?!

The confusion is still present as to whether we are cut 20% for the 1st hr only or for all hours. A statement was written by home healthcare organizations, that IPs pay will be cut 20% for the 1st hr and for every subsequent unit.

In regards to the meeting on August 15th.....take that statement with a grain of salt. Nobody seems to know anything about that or who the person is who is making that statement. IPs and consumers needed to have a voice prior to this all going down, not after the fact. Just the fact, many IP aides and nurses are not even aware of the 20% pay cut, says it all. I guess, they will find out when they start getting a lower pay amount come this October.

It is obvious to me who is accepting this crap! Independent providers are....

We have the one group of independents who are not even aware yet of what has gone down. Then, we have the group of independents who are aware of what has gone down, but have no balls. Then, we have a very small group of us, who are too small of a group and are unable to fight this, because we have no voice behind us.

LMAO, You ARE SO RIGHT!! I sent emails out to IP nurses, as well as the IP HHA/PCA in my area and received only one response!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your guess, would be as good as mine. I think, someone is just blowing smoke. The person who wrote that statement, could have privately emailed us through here or emailed IPS through our emails listed on carestar, but nothing.....nobody I know of has heard anything, as usual. :crying2:
