What do you think? If this was your patient, what would you do in this situation?

This question will help you think critically as a nurse. So imagine that you were in the room with the patient (alone) and the patient began to have trouble breathing and was coughing up sputum. What would you do?

okaay then well im not to sure im only 10 weeks into my end course but ill give it ago, could you sit the patient up which helps them obstract more oxygen to their lungs and easier to breath and posible give then a vomit bag so they can spit the phlem/ sputum out

Sitting them up would definitely be a great idea. You also want them to be able to spit out the sputum so you can see what it looks like. They are also having trouble breathing. What about supplemental oxygen? How would you know your patient needs more O2? In regard to the sputum- is the patient able to cough it up themselves? If there was sputum stuck in the mouth what could you do (what equipment could you use) to help get it out?

1. Yes, place them in a High Fowler's position

2. You or Respiratory can perform Chest percussion therapy

3. Instruct the patient how to use an incentive spirometer

4. Provide with oxygen, if needed

5. Orders for breathing treatments

6. Suction and deep suction as needed.

7. Encourage the patient to cough and deep breathe.

What is obstract? and why a vomit bag...an emesis basin or tissue will do just fine.

We are happy to help with homework but we will not do it for you. What have you researched so far? What semester are you? You need a care plan book. I prefer Gulanick: Nursing Care Plans, 6th Edition or Ackley: Nursing Diagnosis Handbook, 9th Edition. I the care plan book there are nursing interventions listed. A huge part of becoming a good nurse is the developing of those "critical thinking skills" you hear so much about is a vital skill that has To be learned.

We, as nurses, think differently.....if the worse case scenario happened what would you do for this patient. We have to always be prepared for the what if and how to best care for our patients in the best and safest way. We are also detectives seeking remote information to best care for our patient and find out what is wrong and how best to research to care for it. Nursing is unlike any other profession and makes you develop a unique set of skills......nursing school helps you do this. What does your text book say.
