I'm hoping some of you out there might be able to help me. I've been lurking here reading posts for ages. I've thought about nursing for years now, but I feel that working as a Patient Representative might be more suited for me.
Here's what I'd like to do: work with patients and families to make sure both ends are properly educated on why they are being hospitalized (I'd ideally like to work in a hospital setting), what there options are, and how to move forward with treatment. I'd also like to make sure that both patients and families are as comfortable as possible and that all their needs are being met.
Is there a position similar to this that exists in the hospital environment? Do you think I would need to pursue an MSW for this kind of work - or alternatively would I need to go to nursing school? I have a BA and an MFA, and have some volunteer work in an inpatient psychiatric unit at a hospital. I really feel that this is something I would love doing, and would be good at.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I shadowed a social worker during our community health class and it seems like it would be a very rewarding job, but the social worker said that she feels like she "gives" so much of herself at work, that she is exhausted when she gets home. It would probably be best to explore your options with an academic advisor and tell them what you are looking for in a job. Best of luck!
Thanks LDD!
Anyone else have any experience with Patient Representatives?
