Hello all NY nurses/students
I just graduated with my ADN in maryland and will be taking my boards beginning, middle of July. I want to move up to NYC!!! However, I have heard BAD things about pt/nurse ratio. Can anyone give me any info on what they are and do the hospitals stick to them. I have heard of 10 to 1!?!?! Thank you so much!!

Most private hospitals have PT/RN ratios ranging from 6:1 - 8:1.
City hospitals usually tend to have ratios ranging from 8:1 - 10:1 (10:1 being some extreme cases for HHC hospitals that are severely understaffed see: Metropolitan hospital).

you can handle it.
So as a new grad, I shouldn't worry?! Here in Maryland it is about half that, usually 4:1 at the most. Also, would it be any different for ER or Peds?

oh man, these ratios are so dangerous for an inexperienced nurse. think of your new license cause the hospitals certainly wont! they just want to keep costs down. nurses on these kind of floors only have time to pass meds willy nilly. that is so dangerous when you dont even know your patients. that's why i went to icu first off. it is intense and you have to know your patients in and out, but at least you can do full assessments and have an idea of what you're treating. the floor is brutal to their nurses. i dont know how they handle it. more power to them!
