Pasadena City college OR East Los Angeles college?

Published

Hello, I am a stay-at-home mother who wants to be a nurse.

I am still thinking which school I have to apply...Pasadena city college or East Los Angeles college. They both are close to my place, but they require little bit different pre-req classes. (I haven't get started of taking any pre-req.)

PCC ; Fewer pre-peq classes, (only couple of online classes)no entrance exam. High pass rate of RN. Long waiting-list(at least 5 years), lottely.

ELAC; more pre-req classes than PCC, but most of them can be taken online. TEAS exam as an entrance exam, and lottely. Passing rate of RN is decreasing in those years(90 to 60%).

My child is still little, so online classes are very useful, but I do not know if I can transfer units taken at ELAC when I apply to PCC.

Could you tell me your opinion if you are in one of them? :redpinkhe

That's right. PCC excepts 60 students for 1st semester RN program but is now choosing students based on GPA (but if you have W's or repeats, that will lower your chances). I am a 1st semester RN student.

Good Luck,

PCC Lancer

hello, ive been waiting a year for pcc rn, i have completed all pre reqs and now am 1 & 1/2 weeks away from finishing cna class so that i can apply to lvn. im hopping that if i do lvn at pcc i will have better chance to get into rn-lvn bridge program AT PCC....any advice????, may i ask how u did in ur sciences, or if u had W's, so i have an idea.... do they onley accepy people with strait A's in pyso, antatomy, micro? and with no W's?

THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!

future nurse 47,

I got A's in English, Micro, and Anatomy. I made the mistake of taking Physio over winter intersession while working part-time and got a B. Also, l finished all other classes needed for major (before applying) and got A's. No W's.

In asking around, Most students in nursing program have very high GPA's for the core classes mentioned above and in general most had overall GPA 3.6 or above.

There were several people who applied who had not completed all the general ed courses but still got in and are completing them over intersession.

My advice:

1. strive to get A's if possible and NO W's in the 4 core classes - or be a male student (it's unfortunate but they appear to accept males who grades are not as good because less males apply and they like to keep some sort of male/female ratio....only problem is, if you can't keep up grades in pre-reqs, you may not be able to keep up 75% required to stay in nursing program and those who fall below 75% by end of semester have to repeat semester (only one chance for repeat, then you get kicked out - so far, about 30-35% of my original class is gone but some may have quit for other reasons than grade - I don't know)

2. Find out now what is required to get into other colleges - there are other classes required so if you take them now, you can apply at several colleges at once and get in faster.

3. If your grades for the core classes are not at least a 3.0, try for the LVN-RN bridge program (it will take longer to complete but new RN grads are having a tough time finding jobs right now so there is no hurry) you may even want to try to work as a LVN for awhile to increase your chances of getting a job as an RN.

4. If you only want to get into PCC, take all your pre-reqs there because you'll have an earlier registration date when it comes time to choosing your clinical instructors which will help in your success VERY IMPORTANT!! - be sure to check them out on "Rate your professors.com" !!

thank you for all your info!!!!

has anybody got into lvn program at PCC? I applied and prob will know in 10 weeks according to them, just wanna know if anyone has been accepted to LVN at PCC, I have completed all pre reqs as well as CNA at PCC, but wanna know how good of a shot i have to get in, they say its based on having all pre reqs completed. but if anyone has been accepted can u please let me know what u had while applying? anyone have any info, i would highly apprecaite it!!!! :)

I;ve always heard good things about PCC. I applied for their RN program last year and i've applied again this year for the coming FALL. It looks like a great school. I pretty sure there is no wait. If you don't get in, they make you reapply for the program (which is what i had to do) Good luck on your decision.

Thanks, good luck to you too!!!! i hope we both get in :)

The problem with PCC in taking pre-requisites is that it is extremely hard to get in those classes especially if you are a new student. You are given a priority code for registering and if you haven't been a regular student at the school, then you register later than most. That means you most likely won't be able to get into the prerequisite classes at PCC. I lived in Pasadena and could not get a pre-requisite class for 3 semesters; I decided to go to Santa Monica College instead.

Has anyone hear from Pasadena City College for FALL 2010 acceptance? I'm still waiting..... and waiting... and waiting..........
