Hi all. Just wondering if anyone completed their orientation on a part time basis? I went into nursing because of the flexibilty ( I have 3 boys 7,5 &3) and told my new hospital employer that I could only do the 12 week orientation part time (weekends and a couple of evening shifts during the week). Its a Telemetry/Neuro floor and right now, my thrid week in, I am completely overwhellmed and want to quit. My preceptor thinks its because I am not there all of the time and that parttime is not good. I don't know if this environment is good for me and want to throw in the towel, but in the same respect am I giving myself enough time.

My confidence level stinks (always has)!! I know you get more confidence with experience but I don't think it will ever come.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Your preceptor might be right. Unless you have a strong background, it is very difficult to orient on a part time basis. In fact, a lot of units won't even allow it unless the orientee has several years of experience.

Is there any way you could increase your work hours for a short time? Yes, it would be a little difficult for your family -- but unless there is something wrong with them, they would survive. That time spent immersed in your new career would allow you to "give it your best shot" so that you could succeed, or at least know for sure that it was not right for you.

I'm a PT employee myself (24 hours/week). Yes it is more difficult having days in a row off and coming in and having new pts often, but it is do-able. I have a family as well and working PT works for all of us. You have to do what's best for you, kwim? Give it more time. We have basically a 12 week orientation, whether you're full time or part time (full time either being 3 12's, or 2 8's, 2 12's).

Hang in there and don't be so hard on yourself.

Thanks. I was told that my orientation time would be extended which is fine with me. I have come to realize that I am in need of an organizational tool. I think if I get one that works for me, I wont feel soooo overwhelmed when getting and giving report and assessing my patients.

Thanks again for the support.
