Hello, I just recently finished Nursing School this year in May. I'm currently working in the Emergency Dept. My question is when would it be safe to look for a part-time job and should it be in the ER or in different dept.

Are you talking about a part-time job other than your ER job? And as far as "safe" do you mean as you being awake enough to be safe on the job?
I'm going to assume yes to both of those questions. First of all, does your current position allow you to work overtime? Because that is where you will make the most money. I know a lot of people who do it where I work and end up making more than 100K a year. When you start getting into double and triple time, it doesn't take long for the salary to explode. So, I would recommend trying to do that first. As far as being safe, that will be up to you. One thing good about picking-up extra shifts is that you can always pick-up less for awhile. If you get a second job, you may be forced to quit.
Just some thoughts. Good Luck!

The poster above has a point. There is a contract you sign with a second job, a contract which stipulates a number of hours of work. You'll be fine maybe in the first two weeks, but it will definitely get harder after. So go for a part-time option. How about an internship?

And you'll see after that.
