Part-time Job or Focus on my Grades

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So I'm taking one of the pre-req for the program which is physiology and the 3 other classes are nursing cognates. I'm debating whether or not I should get a part-time job at taco bell-maybe 9 hrs a week- and trying to study for my TEAS this November 19th. Or should I focus on trying to get an A for physiology and Microbiology (taking it for Spring 2021)? My school's minimum requirement is a 3.2 and my GPA for my pre-reqs is low. I only have 2 A's and the rest is a B and B-. I can't retake them because I passed the class. Would getting a part-time job at a fast-food be wise so I can put that I can work and be a full-time student. I want to get work experience that's why. I need your opinion because the managers asking if I want to work or not.

I'm guessing (and if I am wrong please correct me) you are a 'traditional 18-21 yo' college student? Because you seem a little stuck on meeting the admission requirements for a single school- all your eggs in one basket so to speak. (There's a whole raft of reasons why you should consider several nursing programs- topic for another discussion)

Have you ever had a job before? (Not judging, just asking) Because you might be surprised to find that a job helps you be a better student- you are forced to prioritize your time- and perhaps not slack off on studying.

I think a much better job would be something in healthcare - CNA, clerk etc. It will likely pay a smidge more than fast food and you will be forming connections with people who someday can help you as you work toward becoming a nurse.

Bottom line: You can work AND be a successful full-time student. I know it was a million years ago, but I worked basically 30- 50 hours per week through all of my nursing programs LPN through doctorate.
