Paramedic considering Excelsior. Good move? Or bad choice?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I am a full time paramedic wanting to make the move in to the nursing world. I work alot and have a family in the mix.

Excelsior looks appealing and I have heard some great success stories.

I'm just wondering how it will look in the long run? I plan on taking my education further but just want to jump that RN hurdle.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Don't be concerned with how it will look. A degree in nursing allows you to sit for the NCLEX and that is just about the same everywhere. Instead you should be concerned with how doable this program will be for you. Some paramedics find it to be a breeze while others just can't get the hang of it. The CPNE at the end can be the downfall even for nurses with years of experience, so the whole idea is one big, expensive gamble. Much, much better to apply to and graduate from, a traditional nursing program. Save Excelsior for your Plan B should you be unable to complete a traditional program.
