My friend is going back for her BSN degree. She was asking me what would make a good topic for a paper she is writing the instructor said that the paper topic would need to be something she could dig deeper into such as-Depression in End Stage Renal Disease, New treatment options for people with Heart Disease.

Bad choices to write about would be-End Stage Renal Disease, Heart Disease, An informative paper on a disease (S&S, pathology, treatment, etc.) Honestly I have been out of nursing school for ten years and can't think of a topic that would make a great paper for her to write about. Has anyone had any experience with writing papers on a topic like Depression in End Stage Renal Disease and had a lot success with the topic. Thanks for your help.

Your friend should figure out what general fields of nursing interest her the most. Then she should go to the library (in person or online) and browse journals that focus on that specialty. She should look at what topics are "hot" in that field and which topics have plenty of relevant research available to use for her school project.

That process will give her a topic that she is interested and that also has the resources she needs to do a good job. She'll even get a head start on the literature review!
