OK. I know Nursing school is hard, but the books are ridiculous!!!

Well, today I went to the college where I will be starting nursing school in the Fall. I purchased my books and just cant believe it!! Am I really going to go over every chapter of those books in one semester? Or will I probably be using some of the same books throughout the program? I mean.... one particular book "Medical Surgical Nursing" is abot over 2000 pages in tiny print!! I mean.. this thing is bigger than the old bible my grandfather had in the middle of the living room. It seems the whole world could fit in there, and this is only one book of the over eight they determined to be required!!

I know you read plenty, but this just seems impossible.

Please someone tell me what this is all about?

i just finished pre-reqs for a 2 year RN program at local Community College, im on the waiting list and it looks like i will be starting in Summer or Fall of 2006.

The more i read on this site about how hard nursing school is,,it seeems to be alot like the movie "OFFICER and A Gentlemen"

Louis Gossett Jr watching your every move screaming, "I WANT YOUR D.O.R. MAYO!!!!" :angryfire

BUT I GOT NOWHERE ELSE TO GOOOOO!!!! :crying2:

:chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

I read somewhere on this site a guy said "Nursing school is just a game,,,go with the flow,,,study what they tell you to study and dont get overwhelmed by the big books and you will be fine"

Seems like good advice to me.

I don't know how other schools work, but I have never felt like the instructors were trying to weed us out. They are making sure we are competent, but not trying to intentionally make us fail.

Making you work incredibly hard isn't wanting you to flunk out, it is to make sure you want it and make you a good, knowledgable nurse.

Work for the successes, don't think about the what if's otherwise your wasting too much time worrying and not doing the work that leads to the "what if's"

I felt the same way..i still have the "what ifs" about graduate school. we all get nervous. as for reading start out doing as much as you want, after the first exam of each calss its pretty apeprant which professor expects you to read..versus refer to the text.

Good luck, your gonna love it!!!

If its anything like my school, you'll get a few pages here in one book...a few pages there in another book...and a paragraph now and then somewhere else...for each unit. The reading is heavy but not impossible and it ends up being pretty interesting anyway. Reading for learning is different than reading for pleasure anyway, and you will find your own style as you go along.

Plus, first semester is the worst for books, you'll likely use them in future semesters.

We are lucky in that we are actually told NOT to bring any books to classes. Maybe your school does the same. Otherwise,a good rolling suitcase is what I see others using at school.
