Your patient is to receive morphine sulfate 4mg IVPB for breakthrough pain q2h PRN. The patient is on continuous morphine drip at 4mg/hr from a peripherally inserted central catheter(PICC)line,with a morphine sulfate concentration of 50mg in 50 ml.Over an 8-hour shift the patient receives three PRN doses. What is the total mg of morphine sulfate the patient received for the shift?

a).The patient has not had a bowel movement in the past 3 days. What interventions must be made?

b).The prescrber has indicated that the patient is to have MS Content PO after the patients first bowel movement.What is the equivalent dose of the MS Content PO to the IV dose the patient has been receiving?

My patient receives 4mg/hr[8hr shift]=32mg Also 3 PRN doses 12mg total .Over all 44mg of morphine. Not sure how to find equivalent dose?

Google chart to convert from IV or PO morphine to MS Contin. There are equivalency tables. I will see if I can find one. I know 10mg IV = 30mg PO morphine (not controlled release)
