Hey everyone. First time on this site, I've been a nurse for about three years now and I am returning to get my FNP this fall at OSUs online FNP traditional part time program. I am planning on working full time as a night Rn while doing it. They recently asked us to do all the preset stuff, like online orientation and such and one of the PowerPoints said and I quote "to those of you who think you'll be able to work while in this program,
think again". Was super upset at this. I choose a well known online program because I wanted a good education and a flexible environment. Has anyone out here done this program? Any tips? Anyone agree that I'll be able to work? Anyone? Help!!! Thanks again for reading =] also any tips on just the transition from RN to NP would be greatly appreciated!

Certainly if you are taking one, or even two classes a semester, you will be able to work. Will it be difficult, and require rearranging schedules, possibly getting help and support from family members? Probably. Will it require lifestyle changes or giving up some other favorite activities temporarily? Good chance, yes.
I strongly believe in extensive work history within whatever NP speciality you are pursuing. There are some on this forum who say it doesn't matter, but I don't think you can get the big picture any other way.
For the RN to NP transition, you need to start approaching your daily work as though you are the NP taking care of the patient. Of course, you won't be writing orders, but you need to drop the "carry out orders without questions" mentality of an RN and start asking why, why, why and how, how, how. It requires a great deal of personal dedication, and is over and above what you will be asked to do in school, which will almost certainly not be enough to prepare you. Fortunately, you are working full time, so it will take perhaps 4 years to finish your degree. You will need all of it.
I did all of the above, plus drove 2 hours each way to attend class, so yeah, if people could do it back in the dark ages, you can do it too.
Hello and thank you for your reply. I believe most semesters I'm taking two courses. Right now I work full time as a night labor and delivery Rn now so that won't be changing, but I am dropping my per diem side job once the program begins and I don't have kids or a dog or really any time consuming commitments minus my so but he'll be fine and understands. I worked full time in undergraduate while in school full time and I did well with the time management aspect so I'm hoping that it all comes back to me!
Thank you again for your response, it was eloquent and interesting.
Are you an NP? Is there anything you wish you knew before becoming one? Any advice on what steps to take first?
