Orlando

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi everyone. I am going to be moving to the Orlando area in January 06 from Nashville. I will be a new RN (yay!) and new to the area.

Right now I am working in trying to find the best areas of town to live. I will be wanting to rent a house (not apt), and I would prefer to live on the outskirts of Orlando in the suburbs, rather than the inner city. I am leary of getting advice from the rental agencies...was wanting a real point of view on the better neighborhoods. I heard Winter Park was nice, and that Seminole County was good, but a bit more expensive (not on my new RN salary).

Also, I have heard mixed reviews about Florida Hospital vs ORMC. I do not know yet which field I want to go into, but I am leaning toward cardio or perhaps working my way up to surgery, starting off in general MS to get my skills honed. I will be taking my boards down there for the FL license. Any advice?

Any information from any Orlando native (of former native) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jenn :)

Just a quick note to those of you planning to move to Orlando..... start looking for a home early.

Unless you are buying, be prepared for long wait or very expensive rental properties (whether they be apartments, townhomes, single homes, etc). Most rental properties are either beind sold or converted to condos.

I received a notice from my leasing office just last month that my community was turning into a condo. I have 6 months to move out, but I am starting to look now. A recent article in the Orlando Sentinel described this problem and some people have been waiting 3 months for a rental unit.

It doesn't just apply to Orlando either. The areas of Sanford closest to Lake Mary, apartments in Altamonte Springs and Maitland are also turning condo. (Sadly, it's one of my default questions to community managers now... "So are there any plans to turn this community into a condo assoc?")

I couldn't find the original article, but here's a recent update from the local paper. You can also try google.com:

Good luck!

HI EVERYONE,

I AM A LPN CURRENTLY IN A LPN TO RN BRIDGE PROGRAM IN GEORGIA. THIS IS MY LAST SEMESTER AND I CAN NOT WAIT TO GRADUATE ON MAY 5TH . I AM SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT RELOCATING TO FLORIDA AFTER GRADUATION. MY FAMILY AND I VACATION THERE ABOUT 3 TIMES A YEAR ANYWAY SO I SAY, WHY NOT JUST MOVE TO THE ORLANDO AREA. THERE ARE SOME REALLY GREAT POSTS HERE. THEY ARE VERY VERY INFORMATIVE. MY FIANCE AND I ARE COMING DOWN THERE IN MARCH DURING MY SPRING BREAK TO START LOOKING FOR HOUSING. THANKS TO YOU ALL, I HAVE A GENERAL IDEA WHERE TO START LOOKING. WE ARE PREPARED TO PAY UP TO $1500/MONTH IN RENT. WE WANT A 4 BEDROOM/2 BATHROOM HOUSE IN A GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD FOR CHILDREN. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS, IS IT WISE TO TAKE THE GEORGIA NCLEX AND THEN APPLY FOR A FLORIDA LICENSE OR JUST TAKE THE FLORIDA NCLEX? ALSO, WILL I HAVE TO DO THE CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES THIS YEAR, AS I WILL BE A NEW GRAD? I WANT TO MOVE TO FLORIDA SHORTLY AFTER GRADUATION, SO WHAT IS THE BEST PLAN OF ACTION? ANY INFORMATION WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
