Organizational strategies

Published

Hello! I am a new nurse working on a very busy oncology/med-surg unit in NC. I have been on the job for 5 weeks and am feeling a bit overwhelmed. I do have a preceptor still but she is much younger than me (I'm 38) and her method of organizing her day doesn't work for me. Can anyone share how you go about your day and keeping everything straight? I have 5 or 6 patients with a quick turn around of discharge and admits.

I usually start now with my most critical patient, passing meds and trying to get my assessments done by 10am so that I can chart. It never fails though that something occurs around that time that throws my whole day off. I hate feeling disorganized and like I can't be more than a "task" nurse.

Any advice, tricks of the trade, etc are appreciated!
