Orange County job opportunities?

I am strongly considering moving to Orange County next Spring to be closer to my grand children. I have a California license, close to 40 years ED/Critical care experience and am working on a Masters in Nursing Education. I also am an ACLS, TNCC, ENPC instructor. UC Irvine looks good on paper. I have had several positions in teaching facilities over the years and they have always been good experiences.

I would like to work ED initially and move into a hospital education position eventually. I have no desire to teach at the University level. I am not a spring chicken but can still hold my own in a busy ED.

Also, I have never worked in a state with unions. How does that affect practice if it does? The possibility of being involved in a strike is foreign to me, so please educate me if you can.

If anyone has any insight into job options and possibilities, I would appreciate it. Thanks

I can't speak for UC Irvine, I work at another facility in Orange County. I believe UC Irvine is the only hospital that has a union other than Kaiser in Orange County. It's a government position, the chance of striking is pretty small. Usually a contract lasts for so many years, and then when negotiations happen for a new contract is when the risk of going on strike occurs. Unfortunately, for the cost of living, Orange County doesn't pay that well. I imagine you would be at the top on their pay scale because of all your experience and certifications as well as the education you are working on.

I have driven by UC Irvine, it looks pretty nice and I work with a few nurses who used to work there, they seemed to like it although I think it does get a bit rough working at facility with so many physicians-in-training running around.

I'm sorry I can't help you more and good luck to you.
