I AM A STUDENT NURSE IN A BSN PROGRAM EXPECTING TO GRADUATE IN 2000. WHAT STEPS DO I NEED TO TAKE IN ORDER TO GET A POSITION IN THE OPERATING ROOM. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT. PLEASE HELP!!
look for a university or teaching hospital that are offering OR internships. if none are available in the area you want to be, start calling OR managers and ask them if they would be willing to hire and train you. This is a time of 'no guts, no glory.' Since you've got some time (not graduating for over a year) see if you can get a part-time job or summer job in an OR or peripheral area. Work as a ward secretary (or whatever they are called there). Work in sterile supply, or basically anywhere that will hire you. Once you get to know people in that area, they will hopefully be much more willing to take a chance on you after you graduate. Let me know if you want further info. Good luck.
By all means you should seek employment in the periphery of an operating room environment. This should of course be the one you hope to work in, but if you cannot arrange that, go to work SOMEWHERE to begin learning the profession. Just working in the instrument room or in what we call 'Center Core' where the sterilized instruments and supplies are stored for the OR suites, will teach you so much. When you go to work in OR, you will be overwhelmed at first with all the details of each case and the way each doctor prefers to perform each case. Learning the details about instrumentation is a great advantage because it helps eliminate a good portion of the inevitable confusion of your first few months. Good luck! And look up some of my Florida Florence Project partners down there. http://www.florenceproject.org/
You'll be glad you did!
