I'd say see if you could get open shifts in your own hospital in other service lines to get a more rounded experience. Also working nights and weekends occasionally gives you great exposure to other specialties (Gyn/ GU, neurosurgery, General, OHNS, ophthalmology , transplant). This way you shine out to your management and are already familiar with so much and are able to make extra money too.

Hi all,
I am currently a circulator at a level 1 trauma facility. I have been training for 1 year now on off-shift with my main focus being ortho/ortho trauma. I have also learned to scrub ortho as well. But, due to being off-shift I am floated to other specialties to circulate except for cardiovascular and robotics. I am pretty comfortable so far for the most part and I know I still have a lot to learn.
Although I only have 1 year experience, I have been thinking about getting a PRN position at a local hospital to get familiar with other charting systems as well as knowledge of a different flow. I also am looking for PRN because my hospital does not pay much at all and I would like to travel some time in the future.
Am I jumping the gun by wanting to take this leap? Should I just pick up shifts at my hospital so I’m more well rounded before gaining another hospitals way of doing things? All help is appreciated!
