Opportunities for pre-nursing student

Published

I am attending Comm. College of Philadelphia to do my prerequisites to transfer to Thomas Jefferson university for nursing. I was just wondering if anyone knows any opportunities that are out there in Philadelphia that can give me experience with nursing? It can be volunteering or an internship or whatever. I was just wondering so it can make my resume look good as well as give me valuable experience. thanks!

I am in Chester County but you might want to check the volunteer opportunities with a local hospital. I thought volunteering was just like being a candystriper but (at least out here) there are volunteer opportunities that would give you some experience with patients that you might find helpful and I am sure would like good on your resume. Good luck!

Hi,

In my opinion, the BEST nursing experience you can get under your belt is to get your C.N.A. and work as a Nursing Assistant in a hospital or SNF. The skills you leran as a CNA will be very valuable to you in your first year of nursing school since it's basically exactly what you learn then. Plus, if you do choose to go that route, there are many opportunities to go from a CNA to LVN to RN.

If you're not able to do the CNA thing for some reason, I think the next step up would be volunteering. Most major hospitals have a volunteer program, so I'd go check out your local hospital's website and apply!

You don't have to limit yourself to just hospital work or nursing. I have been a personal trainer and group exercise instructor for years and I think that helped me get into the pre-licensure program. If you have an athletic ability or are interested in fitness, you can get a job at a health club. I think they like to see that you have an ability to work with people to improve their health. Good luck!
