opioid dependant l&d patients

Published

hello,

i am currently a senoir nursing student about to start my ob round. My best friend/ almost sister, is currently pregnant and on suboxone and klonopin, prescribed by her regular physician, not her ob. Anyways, my concerns are with pain relief during delivery, the baby's well being after birth, and her Hep C infection. She has not asked her ob about this stuff, and they have not discussed it with her. i feel i am more concerned than her at this point. As with her hep c, she was exposed and deverloped antibodies???? any and all info on this topic would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks :)

We can't give advice here. I suggest your friend deliver at a hospital that can handle withdrawing a baby from the meds she is on though.

Has the OB not taken a medical history, or is your friend afraid to tell the OB about her medical conditions and medications? In either case, she does not have a healthy relationship with her doc. If yur relationship with her makes it productive, you might ask her about that and help her either "test" her current OB by telling him or her what is going on, or by finding a different OB that she can trust, and who takes histories from his or her patients.

i do not want medical advice, i want to know how these situations are generally handled, as in our area there is a large population of users of all sorts.

Yes her OB and PCP are fully aware of her situation, she has been open and honest with them from the start. She has been in treatment for some time. Her OB and Dr. tell her she is fine and baby is healthy, and everything is ok, and she is satisfied with that answer. i require more info i guess. I know the dr's do not want to cause her to worry, but i also feel she should be preparing herself mentally for any and all situations that may arrive.

When asking for information relating to someone you know, it constitutes asking for medical advice which is against the terms of service of this site. Try contacting the local/regional perinatal addiction program for some information.
