OR orientation questions

Specialties Operating Room

Published

Hello, I'm in my third year of nursing up in canada. Am interested in working in the OR when I graduate. I have a shadow shift in the OR that I was able to arrange for myself. I have a question

What should I ask the nurses while I'm there. Is there anything specifically that I should find out, to know whatever it is I should know before deciding to work there? I hope that makes sense.

Oh and I love the sticky, thanks to whoever posted that.

Listen...Listen...Listen and take notes on those mentoring you. You will get a feel for the nurses that make the room flow. Let them know you are trying to get a feel for the OR and ask for their help while trying not to threaten them that you will soon be one of "them". It is human nature to be leary of newbies in the OR. Don't take it personally, it happens in every profession, nursing is no exception--you need to work to be accepted. Stand back and take it all in, experienced nurses will give you an opportunity to participate if you respect their position of seniority and knowledge. Enjoy and good luck.
