Opening our own ALF's

Nurses Entrepreneurs

Published

Hello fellow nurses! I was wondering if anyone can share details, or information on something I am wanting to do with a partner..

We live in Florida and I have already requested the what licensing information I need for the state of FLa but I was wanting to hear from someone who has done something similar or doing the same thing. It doesnt' matter if you live in the same state or not. But here is our idea...we want to open some ALF's that are homes, hire someone to manage and live in it and over see it. I being the nurse would do all the manuals and manage it making sure it is in compliance with State Agencies, and over see any other concerns or problems with home health needs, medications etc.... After our first one is up and successfuly going we want to do more of them. Is it really complicated, hard or significant barriers in doing this that you have faced? Please share you success, your failures and anything else you care to share. I wish there was a book on "how too" but then again, if it were that easy everyone would be doing it. Thanks in advance!!:yeah:

I used to own one a few yrs ago. Few things to consider prior to opening it:

1. Referral source

2. Competition (from other small group homes like yourself and larger ALF)

3. Location (nice suburbs preferably)

4. Good staff (they make all the difference)

Also, double check w/your state licensing whether or not you can provide nursing care to the residents; in my state you can't. But you can get around that by working for a skilled care agency and providing skilled nursing for the cert period , just like you would for any other home care patient.

Good Luck!
