Hello all!

I recently accepted a position in the OCC nursing program(NY) and am SO EXCITED!! I've perused the internet for any blogs or ANYthing on this program, from the color of the uniform/scrubs, to how others liked/faired the program and so on... Is anyone else starting in August? It would be nice to see a friendly face hahah... or has anyone already gone through OCC for nursing; and can shed some light on the program? Thanks Everyone!!!!

My sister went to this program... I believe she had dark blue scrubs for her uniform. The program is very unique within the area because it's pretty much a self-guided sort of thing where you take a lot of tests and if you pass you pass and if you fail you get a couple of more tries before failing and having to talk to your adviser about what to do. Both my sister and a friend of mine who went to this school failed the nursing program, but I'm quite certain that they failed because of poor time management and not being motivated to complete it (my sister ended up joining the Army haha!)

What led you to choosing this program as opposed to the programs at St. Joseph's, LeMoyne, or Crouse? Was it the self-guided approach, or something else?

A couple reasons.... $... So much cheaper to go through OCC than the other programs, and I figure why pay so much more for the same degree (like, 6 times cheaper) also, Time.... I like self study programs overall and it allows me to make my own schedule that works around my employment. and a bonus is, its obviously a state run program, so they have way more money than the private institutes. Their skills lab is HUGE!

Thanks on the navy scrubs... I had heard that, but wasn't sure :)

If you like self-guided study then this is definitely the place for you! I didn't know that about their skills lab, I actually went to OCC for my associate's degree and never even knew about it. All the best of luck and I hope you enjoy your time there - the college as a whole was a fun and relaxing place for me to be and I met all kinds of great people there. The faculty are great as well :)

How are you doing? I am at OCC not in the nursing program yet but I am finishing up my pre req this semester and than can apply in November. I was wondering how it is , I know it is self study but can you tell me more about it?

Hi! So Ill be starting the nursing program at OCC 8/21! I go to orientation on the 17. Im so excited lol.

What was orientation like?

What was the hardest thing you encountered during clinicals and your academic work?

Any tips??? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I am applying for the school of nursing at OCC for Jan. 2019. I was wondering how you liked it this past year and any advice?

Thanks!

Hi,

I know this is an old post but I am looking into this program and just wanted some feedback. I'm actually like 2 hours out of Syracuse but need a program that has a flexible schedule. So this program is basically self taught but once a week you meet for clinicals? How did anyone like the program that took it? I'm motivated enough to do self taught just worried if the online lectures and such were somewhat decent quality?

Thanks

I'm happy to answer any questions you might have?

So here it what the program is currently like:

Clinicals are once per week. However, they hold Overviews for certain courses where they go over material that may be harder to grasp. They plan these days ahead of time. A few weeks/months ahead of the semester you will get a "Plan Ahead Calendar" of all those days. One week you won't meet at all, the next you might meet 2x. It depends. Now you don't HAVE to attend the overviews ...BUT if you need to meet with a teacher to remediate for a test you've failed they would like for you to have gone to it...so just go if u can lol.

Also there are no online lectures. Everything they want you to know and the assigned reading material where the info is located is on online. And the nursing program made a list of one of the top Nursing Programs to attend in NYS so what theyre teaching is def top quality.

IMO i loved the program and how its set up. It can be stressful stressful bc you have to keep up with testing deadlines, you'll find instructors you love, and some with quirks you dont, and has some things that could be improved but it's worth it!

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the info! How are the teachers to work with for the most part? Pretty friendly? Which day of the week are clinicals currently?

Graduated December 2019. Scrubs top is white, pants are dark blue. They were looking at new uniforms when I left but no changes have been made yet. I have friends that are May grads this year. The program is difficult but the experiences are vast and they have a 95% NCLEX pass rate.
