I am starting an LPN program in august. I still have a few prerequisites to finish so that i can do the fast track into the RN program once i finish the LPN. I was wondering if anybody could give me advice on whether or not i should take an easy class or 2 online to finish up the prerequisites while in the LPN program, or if that would be way to much of a work load. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Krystin,
Congratulations on your acceptance! How long is your LPN program? My program was 9 mos. full-time and pretty intense. That said, you might be able to do ok with an extra class during your first semester in the LPN program, depending on the class, as your first semester may be more CNA skills oriented like mine was. I would look into that. Also, I don't know if your program works like this, but I just had clinicals and one nursing theory class my last semester of the program ( in summer), so if I had to I could have accommodated a class at that time as well. I would advise against 2 extra classes lumped on to one semester in the LPN program though. I would space them out between "lighter" semesters and summer. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

You could always take the easy class first semester to see how you can handle the load and take one or two online the second semester. The last class could be taken in summer if need be.

It depends on where you are planning to transfer and what their RN program will accept. For instance, many RN programs (including every one in California that I know of) will NOT accept Anatomy and Physiology if taken together - they have to be taken separately as 4-unit classes with labs. Even if you've done "A&P" as a part of an LVN program, you would have to re-take them separately. Also, many schools don't allow a 4-unit "Medical" Microbiology class but require a 5-unit General Micro (especially the universities - if you ever want to transfer). So, merely taking prereqs for an LVN program doesn't mean those same prereqs will transfer to an RN program.
