NY NSUH to Stony Brook?

I currently work in Postpartum/Newborn Nursery at North Shore University Hospital. I love working for Northwell Health and had always imagined I would stay with NSUH. My husband and I just purchased a house an hour east of NSUH and the commute is too much for me. There are no Northwell hospitals that would promise a better commute. (Huntington) would be all back roads and take me just as long, longer if I was stuck behind a landscaping truck!)

Im interviewing for an L&D position at Stony Brook, which will be an exciting 10 minutes from my house! L&D is where I always wanted to be and I have not had an opportunity all this time to transfer within NSUH.

Sooo.. my concerns are

1) leaving such an amazing health system which in the near future will just keep expanding

2) joining a union hospital... I don't know that much about it and am wondering if it is a pro or a con, are there dues? NSUH health insurance is free, does it get better than that?!

3) less salary.. i don't know by how much yet but based on other threads it seems it may be 5-10k less

4) I have amazing PTO time right now and I have to work 3 sat or sun and 1 fri per 4 week schedule and I don't know how that will change as well as full time at NSUH is 13 shifts every 4 weeks, what is stony brook?

I'm thinking the commute will make the salary difference worth it, hopefully.

If any of you can address any of my concerns that would be amazing and make me feel so much better

Yes I can answer you here too. I saw this after I responded by private message, I don't know if you got that.

There are union dues which is about $100 a month

Health insurance is about $200 per paycheck (biweekly) for family coverage. Unfortunately a lot more then northwell.

You also have to pay for parking which is about $20 per month

Yes. Pay is less!

In 1 month you have to work 12-12 hour shifts, 2-8 hour shifts. And in L&D you have to work 2-8 hour on call shifts. Ever other weekend and holidays

There is no extra pay for any kind of certifications

Do you know the name of the union?

How long for pension to vest?

Do you have to stay a staff nurse to keep the pension, does moving to nursing management get rid of it?

Tuition reimbursement if you attend SBU?

Do you make your own schedule and the manager adjusts it to the needs of the unit, or do people ususlaly work more specific days?

Is it difficult to get the time off that you need?

if you needed to weekends in a row off for something do you just work the other two weekends or would you need to find a nurse to switch with you? And do weekends consist of fri night sat night and sun night?

I'm sorry also when you say family coverage how many people is that, right now it's just me and my husband and 400$ a month is just crazy!

The 2-8 hour on call shifts, do you get overtime for those of you end up going in?

The union is PEF. It is 10 years to be vested and I am not to sure if it's he same if you become a amanager. Tuition reimbursement is I believe 2 3 credit courses for SUNY or a specific set amount for a non suny school. You make your own schedule but management adjusts it. Weekend nights are Saturday and Sunday. And as far as getting 2 weekends in a row off if you need I think it is specific to each situation at that time

Yes you get overtime if they call you in. As far as insurance if it's only for you it's $50 anything else is $200 per paycheck í ½í¸µ

When you're on call do you get paid or only if you get called in? If you work extra weekends do you get paid overtime? I love working weekends like work even more than I have to but when I need one off that's my normal scheduled one that's where the problem lies.

Is the insurance united healthcare for medical and empire for hospital?

I haven't even gone on the interview yet and I'm freaking out about all the pros and cons. I'll be giving up a lot of money to have a better commute and be in a unit I want.
