Online Master of Nursing Programmes

World Canada

Published

I am interested in studying for a Masters degree in Nursing BUT I would prefer an online programme so I can work while studying. I know of Athabasca University and also recently found out about University of Lethbridge. Are there other universities in Canada with online MN programmes?

Furthermore, I am interested in research and would eventually love to work as a research nurse. Would a graduate degree in nursing ( research route) help me in this regard? I welcome comments, advice and tips. Thank you.

If your goal is to do research, suggest you try to attend a university with faculty who have published their nursing research in peer reviewed journals. You can usually find faculty publications under the 'faculty bio' section of the university's website. Once you are in the MSN program, find out if you can assist one of your profs with a research project. What kind of research appeals to you?

I am willing to try anything, just to get into what I love but my interest is mainly seniors ( gerontology).

Knowing your interest is a good starting point. Have you taken steps to increase your depth and breadth of knowledge in your specialty? Are you certified through Canadian Nurses Association in gerontological nursing? Are you a member of a gerontological professional association? If so, do you attend the association's national conferences? Conference presenters often have a wealth of experience and knowledge and when you hear their bios it can give you ideas about how you can plan your own career path.

Since you already started looking at Athabasca University and University of Lethbridge suggest you check their graduate nursing faculty's publications, maybe they have faculty who have experience in gerontology related research? If they do have related research, suggest you read their articles, as it will give you a good idea of their expertise. It may also make you feel confident that their program is the right one for you.

Thanks a lot, I will start exploring the ideas you have given me. For a start, will join my provincial gerontological nursing association.
