On Call?

Specialties Home Health

Hi, I am a new nurse in the field of Home Health and I am already afraid of being out there on my own only because you don't know what to expect..Dx ect...I get about 4-5 visits per day I think because of the lack of expirence I do have only 2 years of Med Surg exp...I wanted to try HH. I like it but there are some things I have seen out there in the homes that I haven't had a chance to work with in the hospital expecially wound care and my gosh the paperwork can be taxing anyway they are going to start putting my on-call and I need some advice should I tell my manager that I don't feel ready I'm just not sure? Any advice?

Thanks!!:chair:

I would be honest with your manager. Ask that when you are on call, an experienced staff member be also assigned to work that weekend; and if the clinical director will be available to field questions, offer advice, etc., after hours/weekends. If your agency is "worth it's salt", they'll appreciate that you are concerned enough to speak up -- you are putting the patients first, and that's important. Good luck! Jeanne

I don't think anyone ever feels ready to be on call--just remember you're safety comes first. Call your on call manager with any problems or questions you might have. I hope you've been doing HH for at least a few months before being asked to do call.
