Older Editions

Hello all,

I was wondering what others thought about using older editions for first semester. I purchased them a year earlier when I had been accepted but had to decline. Now I am in again and about to start, but all my editions are one less than what is required. What do you all think about using these older editions, or do you recommend I sell them and get the newest editions? I thought, perhaps, that I could cross-reference the current required textbooks they keep in the college library if need be. What do you all think. Thanks so much.

I am an instructor. I allow this in some situations. As long as it is the exact same title and author, usually (Fundamentals?...I'm assuming, since you say 1st semester) textbooks change little. Sometimes, however, there are MAJOR revisions. I would recommend finding out from the instructor if what you plan (cross-referencing with the new edition) is feasible. There is one class in which I never allow this......Pharmacology.....usually every edition has major changes.

Thanks so much for your reply. I will take your recommendation and speak with the instructors.

I am using older editions and getting along fine. I tend to use my lecture notes more than the book, along with reading up on topics not fully explained in lecture.

I've used older editions (usually the second most-recent) and I've been fine. Usually the only differences are the page numbers.

Thanks so much!

It depends on how different the editions are and what works best for you. I had the last edition of the Potter & Perry fundamentals book for my first semester and it was actually a pain for me to figure out what I needed to read. The chapters weren't the same, as well as the boxes and tables. I decided for this semester to get the new edition just to make it easier on myself. (nursing school is hard enough).

Good luck!
