I just got into UCO's Nursing Program an I am way excited. I've been looking at different hospitals I think I'd like to work in, and OHH really appeals to me. I am actually going to start volunteering there soon, I think. So, any thoughts on OHH or Mercy in general? Thanks!

I work at the Heart Hospital and I couldn't be happier! Amazing environment for patients and for workers. Great staff and clinical managers!! Such a great place to work!

Well, it depends on what kind of experience you want to have. Are you planning on furthering your education (NP/CRNA)? OHH is a very good place to work if you want to stay as an RN doing bedside nursing. If you want to learn and take care of the absolutely sickest patients you might check out 801 at baptist. There you will take care of CABG, thoracotomies, LVADS, total artificial hearts just to name a few.
I definitely want to go on to be an NP. You make some interesting points. I thought OHH would be a great place because I would get a lot of cardiac nursing experience and it would be intense and I would get some autonomy as an RN, but if you think Baptist would be a better place to get more experience that would help me out late as an NP, then perhaps I should look into Baptist. Can you tell me some more about it?

I can. We take heart transplants, CABGs, balloon pumps, total artificial hearts, LVADs, and thoracotomies in addition to off-service critically ill patients. You would also have experience with CRRT machines and rotoprone beds in 801. A lot of nurses in 801 have their CCRN. Several people I work with are in NP programs, and lots of nurses have worked in 801 prior to attending CRNA school. What else are you wanting to know? You would definitely learn a lot about hemodynamics in 801 and you would have a certain degree of autonomy as a nurse.
(I also feel that Baptist is a better facility than Mercy but that is only because I have ethical qualms with working for any facility that refuses needed or requested medical care to anyone on religious grounds. This is also why it would be unacceptable for me to work for Saint Anthony.)
