Hello all,
I am in the last year of my 4 year program and have just completed my peds and ob clinicals. I spent 6 weeks in the L and D area which included the well baby nursery.
I m looking to do my preceptorship in the nicu and think I have a very good chance of being accepted. I did two shadow days in the NICU and feel in love with the place. I knew when I entered nursing school that it was the area I was interested in. After having spent time shadowing, it sealed it for me! Most of my fellow nursing students do not understand my passion for this area but that is the beautiful part of nursing. There is a place for all of us. :)
My question is, do most feel that going straight into NICU is acceptable without doing a stint in well baby first? I searched the forum before I posted and did not find any specific posts addressing this question. Most of the posts were about new grads and med surg.
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
Have a Happy and safe 4th!! Let freedom ring!!

Found it!! You don't have to reply to my specific question, unless you just want to. I found my answer. Greetings to everyone again and have a happy 4th.

Absolutely. Well-baby nursery does little to prepare you for the NICU. Besides, most WBN are part of a post-partum floor and the nurses also do mother-baby care.
