Oh, why did I do this??

I'm starting my RN program in less than 5 weeks and I'm beyond excited! I love reading these boards and have learned so much. Well, I made the mistake of going to the new grad section and it felt like all the wind was let out of my sails :( I am prepared for having a difficult time securing a job once I graduate, but I wasn't prepared for how many people HATE nursing now that they have finished school.

This is a huge fear of mine; nursing is all I have ever wanted to do and if I'm not a nurse, I have no idea what I would be. I have waited and worked so hard for this opportunity and now I'm really starting to freak out and I haven't even started nursing school!! I will be devastated if I end up feeling like all these other nurses... :crying2:

FWIW, I do know nurses who are happy with what they're doing. A lot of it seems to have to do with the corporate culture of the place you work. In my town there are a couple different hospitals. I've met a ton of people who work at one of the hospitals, and they all really love the organization and their jobs. Of course it's not perfect and there will always be something to complain about (as there is with any job on the planet), but by and large, they are happy there.

I also read a few nursing blogs. Head Nurse is one of them (google it). The author also really seems to love what she does, and she's happy with the hospital she works at.

I'm just a nursing student, but I'm already thinking about how I'll pursue my first job out of school. Instead of taking the first job I'm offered, I might hold out (even if it takes a while) for a job at an institution that I know is good to their employees. When the employees can say lots of good things about the company they work for, it's a really good sign.
