Official source for 265 question myth?

Published

Hey all,

First of all, I took the NCLEX about three weeks ago and passed with 75.

As I was waiting for my results, I was desperately searching for statistics on the amount of questions vs passing, etc. Anyway, somewhere along the line I found an OFFICIAL source (Pearson, ANA...something like that) that said words to the effect of:

"It is a MYTH that one person out of every group get all 265 questions. We wish we could dispel that myth, but it keeps cropping up time and again".

So now that I want to email it to my instructors, I can't find it. Does anyone know of the source?

thx

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is the organization that creates the NCLEX. The NCLEX Candidate Bulletin is a helpful guide to understanding NCLEX methodology. On page 12, under 'Examination Length':

"The length of your examination is determined by your responses to the items. Once the minimum number of items have been answered, testing will stop when the candidate's ability is determined to be either above or below the passing standard with 95% certainty."

Here's another NCSBN link that spells it out more clearly. See Question #5.
