I know this has been discussed ad nauseum on the nurses forum, but not here, as far as I know.A good friend called me about an opening in her practice. I have only been at my current job for 3 months, so I told her I wasn't interested. Today, her collaberating MD called me.He offered me a considerable raise, but honestly, money isn't that big an issue because I took a major pay cut for my current job anyway. What IS an issue for me is that this new job is M-Th, with call for your facility every day and every 3 weeks for all the facilities involved(3). They manage a number of LTC facilities. I currently work inpatient acute care and I work day/night rotation(12 hr shifts). I generally like my job, hate the hours. I know that I will always work these hours as long as I work in my department. If my friend wasn't involved, I would probably say no right away.I guess I want to have my cake and eat it too. Just don't want to make the wrong decision.

Why not shadow your friend for a few hrs and see what the job is really all about?

Yes, I plan to do that.I actually did shadow her several years ago and was not interested at that time. I didn't feel that LTC was for me at that time.

Well, that may be your answer . . . the fact that you did not like LTC. However, how many times have we worked jobs for reasons other than liking them (insurance, pay, hours, etc.)? If you do wind up taking it, plan on being there for at least a year.

I have never had a job less than 2 years, mostly 5-10 years. I planned to retire from this job, when it is time.
