Odd and funny methods used in nursing school

I just wanted to see if anyone had any odd or funny stories about the way they were taught in nursing school. For example, while learing about the importance of the proper way to use a bed pan and different bed pans, the instructor had all the student sit on a bed pan during the whole lecture! Her reasoning: so we would know how uncomfortable it felt and to remember to not leave your patient on it. We only sat on them for 30 min, but my butt was definately sore!

We did a critical thinking exercise during first semester. We all stood up in a circle and were given paper grocery bags to put on our heads. The clinical instructor then said "Take off something you don't need". Most people took off a shoe, or an earring, and we went through a couple rounds before I realized.. I don't need this BAG on my head! It was really effective at helping us think "outside the box" :yeah:

I have a method to help me remember some things for tests.

I will "assign" each disease to a family member or friend. It makes it easier for me to remember what characteristics go with what disease if I have a face on it. For example, when I was doing our GU unit I would think "OK.... Mom has interstital cystitis. What drugs will she be on? What procedures will she have?"

Ohhh that family member one is a great idea, thank you! I'm a visual learner so if I can picture them, I can picture what's going on. Thanks again!:yeah:

I hope it helps you. I thought of it when I had my GU unit and one of my friends has interstital cystitis and I realised it was helping me remember all the symptoms and treatments. I had already been doing that with patient's I had in clinical.
